Heraldry at Duckett's Grove, Co Carlow

Duckett's Grove, Co Carlow is well worth a visit!

Here we try to explain the connections between the sixteen families that appear on the multiquartered arms on the gateway leading to Duckett's Grove.

The origins of the name are explored here:

This website displays the Duckett, Windsore, Bellingham and Burnside arms, four of the surnames that appear in the Duckett ancestry.

Here are some other websites of interest.

The multi-quartered (16 quarters) arms on the gateway at Duckett's Grove provide an insight into the ancestry of John Dawson Duckett (d. 1866). His mother was a member of the Dawson Coates family thus explaining the following arms.

The arms of the multi-quartered combination on the gate way, as we'll see below, come from both the Duckett and Dawson side

The identifiction of the 16 quarters are given by Gerard Crotty in his Irish Roots Series
Heraldry in Ireland, Part Five - Marshalling, 1998 no. 1.

He gives the quarters reading them across by rows

1. Duckett; 2. Windsor; 3. Kendall; 4. Byfield;

5. Bellingham; 6. Burnishead;7. de la Poer; 8. Power;

     9. Barry;     10. de Coursey;11. Berry; 12. Cogan;

     13. Piphoe; 14. Dawson; 15. Pim;      16. Handy (?).

These names appear through the marriages of heiresses.

The final three through John Dawson Duckett's mother's side:

The names of Windsor, Bellingham, de la Poer, and Dawson appear in the Duckett pedigree. Burnishead then appears on the Bellingham side. Kendall and Byfield possibly on the Windsor side.

As we'll see in detail below, the names of de la Poer, Power, Barry, Berry, de Coursey, Cogan and Piphoe are accounted through various marriages.

Thomas Duckett m. Judith de la Poer, who descended from
John de la Poer (Power) who married Ruth Piphoe (Phypoe), he was son of
(5th Lord Curraghmore)

John 'Oge' Power and Margaret Barry, daughter of David Viscount Buttevant.

David Barry was descended from David de Barry and Margaret de Coursey, daughter of David, 6th Lord Kinsale.

David de Coursey was descended from Patrick de Coursey who married the daughter and heiress of Miles Cogan.

The arms of Kendall of Devon are given by argent, a bend vert, these also appear on the castle along the saltire for Duckett. The Duckett arms are also a version of the ancient arms used by Windsore, so both these likely refer back to the Windsor (Duckett) and Kendal families back in the pedigree.
