Heraldry at Dunbrody House

Dunbrody Abbey

Dunbrody House

Dunbrody House now owned and run by the Dundons, was once home to Arthur, first Marquess of Donegal and his son also called Arthur became Lord Templemore in 1831. The family quartered arms, crest (a heron) and motto are to be seen over the front door. The Chichester crest now forms the Dundon logo.

Sir Osborne Etchingham from Suffolk, fourth cousin of Queen Anne Boleyn was marshal of the English army in Ireland where he in 1545 successfully petitioned for a grant of Dunbrody Abbey.
The Dunbrody lands were confirmed to John Etchingham in 1602. His grandson also called John died in 1650, most of the estate passed to his daughter, Jane who married Sir Arthur Chichester, Earl of Donegal. Since then ownership of the estate has passed in a direct line through twelve generations. Jane's great grandson, Arthur became the first Marquess of Donegal and his son also called Arthur became Lord Templemore in 1831.
