The Gores were Cromwellian settlers who were
granted land in the Ballina area. The Knoxs originated in Scotland and settled
in Mayo when William Knox from Lifford purchased lands at Castlerea in Killala.
The marriage of Mary Gore, niece of Arthur Gore, Earl of Arran to Francis Knox
meant these families were linked since then. Their coat of arms became
quartered with the arms of Gore quartering those of Knox. Their son, James
Knox, married his first cousin, Maria Louise Gore. James's maternal
grandfather, Paul Ainsley Gore, had stipulated that James must assume the
additional arms and surname of Gore in order to inherit his estate and hence
the family name Knox-Gore was established.

The coat of arms consisting of nine quarters is very interesting, it can be a challenge to identify all the families involved. Often some of the obscure arms belong to families of heiresses who married in several centuries previously, this is the case here.
