Walsh of Streamsfort, Co Galway

Walsh's in Streamsfort

Our great grandmother was Honoria Walsh from Streamsfort

who was born in 1856 to Timothy Walsh and we think Mary O'Brien

She married our great grandfather, James Cloonan of Clough in 1875. She died in December 1941 and the discussion at her funeral was the happenings at Pearl Harbour. James died in 1900 aged 50 from flu, he had been at a fair in Athenry and got wet and it is believed was a contributing factor.

Their only child was John Joe Cloonan (d. 1959) who married in 1909 Julia Tarpey (d. 1968).

Marriage of Timothy Walsh and Mary Brien 1842

The marriage record of who we think Honaria's parents Timothy Walsh and Mary O'Brien in January 1842 in the parish of Bullaun/Grange.

The O'Brien was also mentioned by my mother, who recalled the story to her by her grandmother from her mother about the night of the 'big wind'.

"Oiche na Gaoithe Moire"

Honoria's mother was an O' Brien from Kilconnell who remembered "the night of of the Big Wind". The roof was blown off the house that night and she remembered going out to the barren and hiding under stones used for corn. The next morning they thought it had snowed again but it was foam from the sea.

On the evening of Saturday 5th January 1839 heavy snow fell throughout Ireland. The morning was completely calm and the sky was covered with motionless dense cloud. As the morning progressed the temperature rose well above the January average. The snow quickly melted. Unknown to all a deep depression (estimated to have been 918 Millibars at its minimum) was then forming in the north Atlantic. The rain commenced before noon in the west. At dusk the wind speeds increased, conditions got colder and alternate showers of rain and hail began to fall. By nine o'clock at night the wind had reached gale force and continued to increase. By midnight it had reached hurricane force and remained at that level until five o'clock in the morning when it reduced again to gale force
