Fahy of Sunhill, Sunnhill, Menlough

Fahy Family of Sunhill or Sunnhill, Menlough, Co Galway

My grandmother was Mary Reilly-Bellew and her grandmother was Mary Fahy-Reilly (c. 1822-79).
Mary Fahy's father was Martin Fahy of Sunhill. My grandaunt Magaret Reilly-Noone says that Mary just had one brother named John Fahy of Sunhill. We look at John's Family after a brief look at Mary's family.

My great great grandmother, Mary Fahy married in 1854 to Michael Reilly of Guilka.

                                    Mary Fahy-Reilly (c. 1822-79) died in 1879 aged 57

Michael Reilly m. in 1854 Mary Fahy

Mary and Michael had ten children, only two who remained in Ireland and eight went to U.S.A. The two who remained in Ireland were John Reilly who married Mary Finnerty and Mary Reilly who married Sean Costello. The marriages of these ten children are summarised as follows:

[1] Mary Reilly married in 1882 Sean Costello

[2] John Reilly married in 1890 Mary Finnerty

[3] Thomas Reilly married Cecilia Boyle

[4] James Riley (Reilly) married Mary Tiver

[5] Winifred Reilly married John Egan

[6] Michael Riley (Reilly) married Anna Tiver

[7] Kate (Catherine) Reilly married Edward O'Brien

[8] Bridget Reilly married John Stafford

[10] Margaret Reilly married Patrick Burns

The details of all the Reilly descendants are to be found at:

Mary Reilly married Sean Costello who purchased the shop at Skehana. Their son, James Costello married Mary Naughton.

Costello's Pub in Skehana, now closed.

A daughter of Mary Reilly & John Costello, Ellen, married Thomas Clancy and their daughter, Mollie died in 2018 aged 101 years (R.I.P.).

More details on the families of the above ten Reilly children are to be seen at:

We turn now turn to Mary Fahy's brother John Fahy, son of Martin Fahy.

John Fahy died in 1903 aged 63 years at Sunhill

John Fahy (c. 1840-1903) married 1865 Margaret Byrne (1845-1923). She was daughter of John Byrne (1803-73) of Ballagh and Mary Crehan.

Margaret Byrne-Fahy died in 1923 aged 78 years at Sunhill

The children of John Fahy & Bridget Byrne were:

[1] Martin Fahy (1866-1871) died young

[2] Mary Fahy born in 1867 and went to New Jersey. She married in 1886, Patrick Reilly and they had about ten children. Patrick was the son of Marci (in Latin, may be Mark?) and Bridget Gibbons.

[3] Thomas Fahy (1868-1956) of Sunhill married Mary Morris
       children are below

[4] Catherine Fahy born 1870, her age later differed on a US Census She married first John Lally in 1900 and second Harry Sudsbury in 1909 both in Boston

John H. Lally was son of Michael Lally and Margaret Murray, Ireland.
John died in 1906, and in 1910 census, Catherine and Harry Sudbury were listed but with no children at that stage, so perhaps Catherine did not have any children from the first marriage.

Children of Catherine and Harry were Walter and David.

[5] Martin Fahy born 1871, likely called after his older brother

[6] Bridget Fahy born 1873

[7] John Fahy (1875-1923) of Ballagh married Ellen Lawless
      children are below

[8] Patrick Fahy born 1877, a member of the R.I.C.

Patrick seems to have been present at Sunhill in 1903 when his father died. He was stationed in Cork and a grand nephew remembers visiting him with his mother. He likely married a lady from Cork and then they later went to Blackpool in England. They unlikely had family. A reference from 1909 in the Examiner refers to Constable Patrick Fahy.

[9] Ellen Fahy born 1879 married Michael Dolan of Ryehill, Monivea
      children are below

Their sister Bridget Fahy, and brother, Martin Fahy also went to the U.S.A. and likely settled around New York New Jersey or Boston

I would be grateful to hear from any U.S. cousins, at
