The Treacys of Ballymabilla and the Salmon connection ...

My great grandmother, Bridget Treacy-Tarpey was the daughter of William Treacy of Ballinabilla in the parish of Cappataggel. The townland with modern spelling Ballymabilla has the other common spellings of Ballinabilla and Ballynabilla along with other variants. She married on 4th February 1869 to William Tarpey of Cloncah (Doughloon) and was aged 24. The church baptism of Bridget Tressy of 8th February 1844 seems to match, her parents were William Tressy (Ballamabilla) and Mary Dolan.

Marriage cert of Bridget Treacy and William Tarpey, 1869.

For the Tarpey family, see:

We don't know that much more about her family other than that Joe Salmon was related, second cousins. The records show this with just the 'gap' on who Joe's great grandfather, William Treacy's father was. He should be the same William as Bridget's father. The tree below shows this is likely but is not definitive.

                                                                   The late Joe Salmon (1931-91)

If Cork had Christy Ring in the 1950's then Galway had Joe Salmon who was a well renowned and respected hurler. Cork also got a bit of Joe when he played hurling with Glen Rovers. He went to school in Garbally and qualified as an engineer. He married Sally Morgan (d. 2009) and they lived in Cork.

Glen Rovers in 1966, someone might help us identify Joe and Christy Ring ?

see:

The late Joe McDonagh remembers his father taking him to Pearse Stadium in Galway in 1957:

Joe's parents were Michael Salmon (1898-1978) of Prospect (Cappataggle) and Catherine Curley (1899-1988) of Kiltormer married in 1926. They lived in Prospect, Eyrecourt and are buried in Clontuskert.

Joe's grandparents were Peter Salmon (1852-1932) of Donaree in Cappataggle and Helena Treacy (1875-1957) of Ballinabilla. They were married in 1895, she was daughter of William Treacy and Anne Coffey.

Gravestone (Clontuskert) of Joe's grandparents, Peter Salmon (d. 1932) and Helena Treacy (d. 1957) Also included on the gravestone is Joe's brother, Peter (d. 1998) and sister-in-law, Myra.

Gravestone of Joe's maternal grandparents.

Joe's maternal grandparents were Patrick Curley (son of James), a widower from Loughturk who married in 1880, Catherine Loughnane (daughter of Michael) of Tristane in the church at Clontuskert.

The Treacy family of Ballymabilla also descend from William Treacy and Anne Coffey. Their son William Treacy (b. 1871), granduncle of Joe, married in 1899 Mary McDonagh of Benmore. Their family are listed in the Treacy and Salmon family tree below.

Joe Salmon was an engineer and he was the engineer who oversaw the renovation works to the church in Cloncah in 1988. Joe's great grand-aunt who we think was Bridget Treacy-Tarpey lived just down the road from the church.
