Heraldry at Castle Caulfield / Castlecaulfield

The Church of Ireland at Castle Caulfield in Donaghmore Parish in Co Tyrone has some old and interesting monuments along with heraldry. The local manor, Parkanaur, is a large, rambling romantic Tudor Revival house which has evolved through the years. Originally the land was held by the O’Donnellys until granted by James I to Sir Toby Caulfield in the early 1600s. The land remained in the ownership of the Caulfields until sold by James Caulfield (1st Earl Charlemont) in 1771 to Ynyr Burges (East Ham, Essex), who had made a fortune in the East India Company.

The heraldry associated with John Ynyr Burgess (1798-1889) is represented by the impaled quartered arms of Burgess and Clements. His wife was Lady Caroline Clements, daughter of Nathaneil Clements 2nd Earl of Leitrim. The quartered arms contain the arms of Burgess, Johnston and Lloyd. John's parents were John Henry Burgess and Marianne Johnston, daughter of Sir Richard Johnston and Anne Alexander. The Lloyd arms go back many generations to Joseph Burgess who married Elizabeth Lloyd daughter of Ynyr Lloyd.

The George Walker Monument

The impaled arms of Walker (?) and Barclay
for Revd George Walker Jun and his wife Isabella Maxwell-Barclay

The arms on the left don't appear to be the usual Walker arms, it was noted on Donaghmore House, said to have been built by Walker, appears a coat of arms, Lozengy, on a chief a lion passant, impaling a chevron between three crosses pattee, the arms of Barclay. These arms also appear on the mural monument at Castle Caulfield Church.
