Map of the 1920 sections 2A and 2B
Map of the 1972 Section 3
The Recording of the Inscriptions
The graveyard
containing more than five hundred gravestones has been mapped and it is divided
into three sections. The ‘old graveyard’ is shown in section one and it
contains the gravestones numbered 1 to 151. The detailed map of this section is
illustrated inside the front cover. Section two was opened in 1920 while the
newest part, section three, labelled ‘3’ on the map was opened in 1972. The detailed
maps for the remaining sections follow at the beginning of those sections. The
number beside each gravestone indicates its position on the map.
The inscriptions
recorded here were finally checked after Cemetery Sunday (4/8/2013) and they do
not reflect changes after that. Every effort has been made to include all the inscriptions
in the graveyard. It is pointed out that this is a record of the inscriptions
on the gravestones and on the crosses of the recently interred but not necessarily
a record of everyone who is buried in the graveyard. Some recently deceased
parishioners may not yet have an inscription recorded and others have crosses
bearing their inscriptions. These are recorded in italics. If there is a family
gravestone, these inscriptions are included with the inscription on the
gravestone. If given, the name of the stone mason is included in square
brackets. Apart from the main headstones, those smaller plaques with personal
prayers or remembrances have been omitted.
Some gravestones on the map are numbered with a letter,
for example 69a; there is no significance to this usage apart from an updating
of the original map. A small amount of punctuation has been added to some
inscriptions for clarification purposes only. Directions as to the location of
a gravestone, such as ‘to the left of’ apply where the viewer is looking at the
map. Some gravestones or markers not containing inscriptions are not mapped.
Many headstones
have requested the reader ‘to pray for the soul of ...’ or in more recent
times, the request ‘to kneel and pray’ is on the kerbing in some plots. We pray
for all interred in Caltra graveyard.
‘Eternal Rest’ or ‘Requiem
Æternam’:
Eternal rest, grant unto them O Lord
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they Rest
in Peace. Amen.
May their souls and the souls of all the
faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

Dillon 123
IHS | Lord have mercy on the | soul of William
Dillon | who departed this life | Augt (13 or 18?) 1818 or 1848? aged
18 yrs. | This monument was erecd | by his beloved father
| Robert Dillon of Mt Mary | for him and posterity.
Robert Dillon of Mount Mary may have been related to
the Dillons of Greenville who in turn may be related to the Clonbrock family.
Members of both the Clonbrock and Greenville families are buried in Caltra. The
Clonbrock family opted to abandon their original burial ground in Caltra when
they conformed to the Established Church (Melvin, page 381). Thomas Dillon
purchased Clonbrock Castle from the widow of Tadgh O’Kelly during the reign of
Elizabeth I. His descendant Richard Dillon avoided outlawry during the
Cromwellian war and was described as an ‘innocent Papist’. He lived at
Clonbrock undisturbed until he died in 1675. His son was Robert who died in
1707 and his son in turn was Luke Dillon the last of the Dillons to adhere to
the Roman Catholic faith. It is thought that the Dillon burial place is near
this Dillon (123) tombstone and the Cruice vault (137). It is no longer be
visible due to the addition of a new bay to the church in 1939.
William Dillon of Greenville was father of Margaret who
married in 1811 Denis O’Brien (see O’Brien 130). Bridget Dillon of Greenville
married in 1824 Peter Cruice (see Cruice 137). The recorded member of the
Greenville family buried at Caltra is Mary Lucinda Dillon who died in 1813 (see
Eyre 137a) and married on 16 November 1798, Edward Burke Eyre of Fairhill, Co
Galway. The presence of gravestones at Mountbellew belonging to the Greenville Dillon
family is also noted. One of the oldest in Latin is to Anna Dillon who appears
to have been a religious and she died on 30 January 1821 aged 79.
Gravestone 123a
This recumbent gravestone near the church measures
175cm by 78cm and has no inscription.

John O’Brien was son of Denis O’Brien (of Kilmore Co
Roscommon and of Ballinasloe) and of Margaret Dillon (living in 1840), daughter
of William Dillon of Greenville. John’s brothers were Denis Thomas a barrister
who was alive in 1850, Christopher who had died by 1839 and Dillon O’Brien of
Fairfield (between Fohenagh and Killure). Dillon O’Brien was born in 1817/8 and
he married in 1840 Elizabeth, daughter of John Kelly J.P. of Caltra House. The
advent of the famine meant that the O’Briens were unable to meet their debts,
Fairfield was sold under the Encumbered Estates Act. Dillon O’Brien left in
1855 staying initially with Peter Cruice (formerly of Greenville) at Michigan.
One of Dillon’s sons, Thomas Dillon O’Brien born in Wisconsin married in 1888
Mary, grand-daughter of Peter Cruice (Casteleyn, pages 194, 202-3).

Bessie are buried in Glasnevin. Their oldest son and heir was William Henry
Cruice (born in 1867) and he married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Kearney, the Principal
of Castleblakeney N.S. (1895-1906). The last family member to be buried in the
vault was their son, William Gerald (Gerdie) Cruice who died on 25 September
1986. There are also Cruice gravestones at
Mountbellew and one is to Peter Cruice of Springlawn who died in 1806 aged 64
and to his wife, Eliza Donelan.
Peter Cruice possibly an uncle of the first
mentioned William, was married in 1824 to Bidelia (Bridget) Dillon of the
Dillon family who owned Greenville. One of Peter’s sons, William Cruice born in
1842 went to Philadelphia in 1864 and was married in 1862 to a cousin, Ellen
Cruice from Roscommon. One of their daughters, Mary Josephine, married Thomas
Dillon (Judge) O’Brien of St Paul, Minnesota (see O’Brien, 130). It is also
noted that Edward Burke Eyre of Fairhill, Co
Galway married Maria Dillon of ‘Greenvell’ on 16 November 1798. Another Cruice
relative known as ‘Blind Daly’ is also buried in the vault.
Gravestone 137b
Part of a gravestone with a few words is loosely lying near the Cruice
vault, the only word that can be deciphered appears to be ‘otherwise’.

Back Cover
This ends the
recorded inscriptions. There are many others buried in Caltra not recorded but
some additional details can be found from death notices in the papers and also
from oral traditions passed on in local families. Two girls were accidentally
killed in Caltra graveyard on 9 July 1871 while they were playing there, when a
heavy headstone fell on them. They were Bridget Raftery and Winifred McLoughlin
(Tuam Herald 15/7/1871). Bridget was the daughter of John Raftery of Lislea who
died on 1 August 1875. His widow, Margaret (née Kelly) emigrated to New Jersey
with her family in 1880. The deaths of
two parishioners in the Titanic (1912) is well documented, they were Martin
Gallagher and Thomas Kilgannon both from Currafarry along with Thomas Smyth who
was born in Killeen in Ahascragh.
The Priests of the Parish
Those who served the people of God in Killasolan/Caltra
were: Fr Morris P.P. (c.1829), Fr
McKeon (c. 1836), Fr Patrick Magauran
P.P. (1836-1865), Fr Eugene White (1865), Fr Patrick Donagher P.P. (1874), Fr
James Neary (1882), Fr Patrick Flanagan (1886), Fr Thomas Gordon (1890), Fr Bartholomew
Donnellan (1891), Fr John Keane (1900), Fr William Hughes (1902), Fr Richard
Morris (1902), Fr Daniel Gaffney (1904), Fr Malachy Brennan (1907), Fr Patrick J.
O’Dowd (1920), Fr Patrick J. Murray (1921), Fr John Donnellan (1927), Fr John
Cunniffe (1938), Fr John Duffy (1950), Fr Peter Feely (1959), Fr Charles Carr
(1973), Fr Francis Glennon (1975), Fr John Middleton (1984), Fr Michael Drumm
(1988), Fr Christy McHugh (1989), Fr Paul Quinn (1992), Fr Laurence Cullen
(1994), Fr Brendan Dunning (2002), Fr Micheál Donnelly (2006), Fr Vincent
McDevitt (2011). It is interesting to note that the priests of the parish lived
in the village on the Caltrapallas side, prior to the building of the
Presbytery in 1896. Their dwelling was the house now lived in by the
McLoughlins that was bought by Michael and Elizabeth McLoughlin c.1908. The first record goes back to
1856 when Thomas Arthur Bellew leased the ‘house, office and garden’ to Fr
Magauran. Those who followed Fr Magauran were Fathers White, Donagher, Neary,
Flanagan, Gordon and Donnellan. Fr Magauran was listed as the leasor of the
property prior to his death in 1865. The Presbytery was built in 1896 in the
townland of Kinclare. The 1901 census lists Fr Patrick Donagher P.P. as ‘head
of family’ along with Fr John Keane C.C. It appears then that Fr Donagher spent
his last years there along with the serving curates of Caltra until he died in
1903.
Those who served as P.P. for Ahascragh-Caltra since
1903 were Fr Patrick Shanagher (1903), Fr Michael Creighton (1923), Fr Malachy
Brennan (1929), Fr John McManus (1967), Fr Joseph Smyth (1978), Fr Noel Durr (1990),
Fr Francis Glennon (1995), Fr Kevin Reynolds (2005).
Stone Masons
The work of some
fifty stone masons over a period of three hundred years can be seen in Caltra. The
earliest identified local stone mason appears to be Stanton/Staunton. The
headstone of Giles Stanton who died in 1761 (gravestone 73) was ‘cut by Iohn
Stanton Smith’. It contains the symbols of a heart, an anvil, a hammer and a pincers.
On the back of the headstone is a cross along with the figure of Christ and the
INRI motif. The style on this headstone suggests a connection with the more
elaborate Staunton monument in Creagh, Ballinasloe and points to a local family
of stone masons. The Creagh monument is to Honora Staunton, daughter of John
Staunton, who died on 16 August 1785 and the monument is dated January 29th
1788. The Creagh inscription notes that the monument was ‘erected and cut by
her father John Staunton (Smith)’. This is likely the same John Stanton who
‘cut’ the Caltra gravestone.
There are
different techniques for carving gravestones and three techniques broadly
describe those in Caltra. Raised bas-relief technique involves removing the
background material in order to leave the carving raised. This can take a lot
of work but the result is a bold solid-looking carving. Many old gravestones
tend to be carved in relief and there are three striking gravestones in Caltra
namely Conheeny (1763), Stanton (1763) and Kelly (1708) – i.e gravestones 52,
73 and 124a respectively. Incised technique is where the image is carved onto
the stone and this is the more ‘usual form’. Carving within a panel or ‘setting
within a panel’ is an effective way of creating bold relief without having to
take the whole of the surface of the stone back to have a raised carving.
The Noone
family of Ahascragh were noted stone masons for several generations. The last
member of the family, Joseph Noone was a member of the masters stone craft
association and he confined himself to stone cutting and monumental work from
about 1900. More than ten of his monuments are to be seen in the old graveyard.
They usually carry a distinctive IHS motif and have a cross-shape at the top
and generally carry the ‘Noone’ name on the side.
There are
gravestones from three distinct periods that can be grouped into what would appear
to be from different carvers or at least carrying three distinctive styles.
These styles can also be viewed in other nearby graveyards. A group of ‘solid
looking’ headstones from the 1850 period, appear to have the same design on a
round-top headstone. They generally carry the IHS motif along with a cross
depicted above the ‘H’. They also have decorative urns on either side of the
IHS motif. Gravestones with this style include Lyons (4), Curley (36), Ferguson
(59), Collins (71), Clarke (92), Kain (94), Harrison (138) and Broderick (143).
Another group from the 1800 period depict both the INRI and IHS motifs along
with distinctive elaborate floral decoration, for example, gravestones 39, 74
and 133 belonging to Coffy (1809), Teril (1800) and Gilmore (1819) respectively.
The upper part carrying the decorative features is carved in relief while the
inscription is incised. The final group dates from the 1780s and again they
carry the IHS motif along with a cross and decorative surrounds. Gravestones
with this style include those numbered 29, 53, 66 and 133 belonging to
Loughnane (1785), Brandon (1789), Ward (1778) and Martin (1781) respectively.
The Ward gravestone also has the letters B.R. carved on the top part along with
the IHS motif, either these letters have a religious significance or perhaps
were the carver’s initials. This last group also has the top carving in relief
and the inscription is incised. It has been suggested that such gravestones may
have had the top part carved by a well known carver while the inscription may
have been inscribed by someone different.
Those stone masons who carved gravestones at Caltra
include: Beegan, Ballinasloe; Burke, Tuam; H. Clare, Galway; Cregg Bros,
Clonfad, Ballinasloe; Crest, Mountbellew; M. Curley, Creagh; M. Devine; N.
Devine, Ahascragh; P. Devine, B’sloe; T. Dolphin, B’sloe; D. Doyle, Carlow;
Fahy, Galway; T Farrell, Lanesboro; Feely & Sons, Boyle; Galway Sculptors,
Athenry; S. Gibney, Mullingar; L. Grehan, Brideswell; Hawthorne, Castlerea; S.
Keane, Lowville; Kelly, Tuam; T. Little, B’sloe; McHugh; Maloney,
Athenry; Seamus McWilliams Mt Bellew; McWilliams, Mt Bellew; McWilliams,
Galway; Mountbellew; Murray, Galway; A. Murray, Rahara; M. Murphy Glenamaddy;
O. Murphy, Mt-Bellew; J. Noone, Ahascragh; Noone, Ascra; J. Noone, Mountbellew;
A. Power, 18 Berkeley St., Dublin; Regans, Loughrea; Rooney, Tuam; Rooney’s,
Athenry; McKeigue, Masonbrook, Loughrea; O’Connor, Knockcroghery; O’Connor
Memorials Ltd.; J. O’Connor, B’sloe; P. O’Connor, Woodmount; P. O’Connor, Athlone.
In recent times Sean Keane who works from Lowville
in the neighbouring parish of Fohenagh has carved and prepared many of the
headstones in the newer parts of the graveyard. Sean started working in Top
Quarries in Ballinsloe and has been working with headstones since 1983 and has
been in the business for the past twenty years or so. His grandparents, Thomas
and Mary Keane from Kinclare are buried in Caltra along with other members of
the Keane family. Sean says that the two main materials chosen for headstones
are ordinary native limestone or granite. Granite is mainly imported from South
Africa and India and it comes in black, brown or grey shades. The limestone is
quarried in Ballinsaloe but it now goes to Carlow where it is sawn into slabs.
The other type of monument is white marble that comes mainly from Italy. More
white marble gravestones are to be found in the older parts of the graveyard.
The marble tends to weather poorly especially near trees.
The inscription on the headstone is achieved by
using special rubbering stencil paper. The letters are cut out on the stencil
paper that is then placed on the headstone and then by the process of blasting,
the inscription is then cut into the stone. This is a form of incision described
above. The main shapes of headstones chosen by families are the apex-top
headstone, the round-top headstone, the curved-top headstone or the
heart-shaped headstone. The standard dimensions for the apex-top headstone are
2 feet and 3 inches in width and three feet in height. Parishioners will be
very familiar with the limestome ‘high cross’ to the Parish Priest, Fr Patrick
Donagher P.P. who died in 1903 (gravestone 152). This cross, the tallest one in
the graveyard, was carved by Beegan’s in Ballinasloe who had a quarry in
Brackenagh. A cross of this height would not be permitted in modern times.
Council restrictions now state that monuments cannot exceed a height of 5 feet
and 6 inches. Traditionally headstones and coffins face east to the rising sun
awaiting the Day of Resurrection, but a Priest or Minister faces the
congregation and so faces west.
Other burials associated within the
parish
It is also noted that some Caltra families are
buried in other nearby cemeteries namely: Ahascragh, Chapelfinnerty, Fohenagh,
Killaghaun, Killeroran, Killian and Mountbellew. There is a burial ground
attached to the former workhouse (now Coláiste Chreagáin) in Mountbellew. The
workhouse was built shortly after the introduction of the Poor Law system in
1838. The cemetery, in which victims of the Great Famine were interred,
featured in Robert Kee’s R.T.E. History of Ireland series. In 1983 the open
burial plot was fenced in. A stone donated by Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Cunnane
was erected in the cemetery and it carries the inscription ‘unknown but not
forgotten, may they rest in peace’. A famine pot has recently been added to the
‘Golden Mile’ walk in Caltra.
Killasolan
The next largest
graveyard in the parish is Killasolan and the first church there dates to the
eighth century. David Ua Dubhagáin (probably Duggan or Doogan) became
archdeacon of Clonfert in 1405. The family occupied the vicarage of Killasolan
for most of the fifteenth century. Malachy Ua Dubhagáin was vicar c. 1430. His
successor was Dermot Ua Dubhagáin who held the vicarage until 1460. The rectory
of Cam (bordering Killasolan) was held by Marianus Ua Dubhagáin in the early
fifteenth century. It is interesting to note, that although Killasolan and
Killian as the parish churches, held by the Uí Dubhagáin, belonged to the diocese
of Elphin. They were according to the Registry of Clonmacnois under the
authority of the bishop of Clonmacnois. In the Papal Taxation List of 1306, churches are listed for both Ahascragh
and Killasolan. The older burials, recorded on gravestones at Killasolan
graveyard, from the nineteenth century include: Patrick Clarke, John Clarke,
Bryan Coffy, James Creahan, Patrick Gavin, Henry Goarden, Bryan Kelly, Elenor
Leonard, Honor Loughan, Michael Mannion and John McDermott. More
recent burials include the families of Clarke, Collins, Crehan, Duggan, Gavin,
Leonard, Kelly, Kilcommons, Kilroy, Mannion, O’Hara and Owens. Queen
Anne gave permission to remove the old ruined Church of Ireland from Killasolan
and bring the stones to Castleblakeney, to build a new church on two acres of
land given by Robert Blakeney. Burials at
Castleblakeney date from 1828. These are recorded in full at the Heritage
Centre there.
Castleffrench
Sir Charles Ffrench, 1st Baronet
of Castleffrench was son of Thomas Ffrench and of his wife, Clara Hamilton, daughter
of Charles Hamilton, of Fairfield, Co. Galway. He was
Mayor of Galway 1773, was created a Baronet on 17 Aug. 1779 and died in 1784. He
married 25 June, 1761, Rose, Baroness Ffrench, eldest daughter of Patrick
Dillon, of Killeen, Co Roscommon. They had a burial ground at Belloo in the
family demesne, not too far from the present day school. Their daughter
died young and her gravestone reads ‘IHS | Here lie(th?) the body | of Marcella French | daughter to Sir |
Charles French Bt | who dd the 6th ? day | of October
17(7?)0 aged | 4? years’. The other gravestone there, is likely for her brother
and it reads ‘Hamilton Fren | ch dyed 13th | Novr 1771 ~
| aged one & | 9 months’.
Cillíns
There are five recorded cillíns in the parish. These
are in the townlands of Bredagh, Caltra, Garryduff, Hundred Acres and Lurgan (Co
Galway Archaeological Inventory). The cillín at Caltra is well marked and is
surrounded by a wall. There are three gravestones that read ‘Have pity on me at
least you my friends. Pray for the repose of the soul of William Joyce of
Caltra Park who departed this life Sep 9th 1871 aged 30 yrs’,
‘In memory of Bridgie McDermott Graigue, Caltra drowned on the 14 –
7 – 1923 aged 17 months and the third more recent one reads ‘In remembrance of
Christina Higgins Caltra and all other children buried here. Erected here 24 –
8 – 2001’. Eventhough the townland is referred to as Caltra, the location of
the cillín is a mile away from the village and it is locally known as Newtown.
No visible surface trace remains of a cillín at
Bredagh, but local tradition suggests that the interior of the ringfort there
was used as a cillín. At Garryduff, within a subcircular area, lie numerous
small set stones, indicating the presence of a cillín. This is also known as
‘Lisnabasty burial ground’ or in Irish ‘Lios na b-Paistidh’. At Hundred Acres, there is an unenclosed
rectangular area, within which numerous small set stones, indicate graves. The
cillín at Lurgan is near a ringfort and consists of a triangular area. A number
of small undressed grave-markers are visible and some of them are aligned in
rows. According to local tradition the last burial took place c. 1940.
The Gallagh Bog Man
The oldest known local burial, likely in the parish,
is that of the ‘Gallagh Bog Man’, found near Castleblakeney in 1821. It lay at
a depth of nine and half feet in the bog. The find was published by Ambrose
O’Kelly of Tycooly House. The body was clothed in a deerskin cape which
extended as far as the knees. The cape was said to have been tied at the neck,
with a band of sally rods and placed at an angle at each side of the body, was
a wooden post or stake ‘somewhat thicker than a man’s arm, about six feet long,
pointed apparently with a hatchet, and placed standing obliquely one at ech
foot, by way of monument’. The find became something of a curiosity and was dug
up on various occasions for visitors. It was finally presented to the Royal
Dublin Society in 1829 and is now in the National Museum. The body has been
dated back to about 2300 years.
Finally!
The successes of Caltra Senior Football team in 2003
and 2004 and Fr Dunning’s support for the team have been well recorded. ‘He
encouraged all to visit the graveyard and to pray to the souls of the faithful
departed who would in turn seek help for them in their games’ (Kilroy, 2004
page 27).

CALTRA GRAVEYARD INSCRIPTIONS (1707-2013)
Preface
This booklet is published
by Caltra Graveyard Committee; it is the culmination of four years’ work
involving many people in the parish and beyond.
Galway Council
Council has recognised the heritage and historical significance of graveyards
by encouraging the recording of graveyard inscriptions. The completion of this
work in several graveyards in North Galway prompted Caltra Graveyard Committee
to commence its own inscription recording project.
The mapping of
Caltra graveyard started in 2009 under a local grant scheme funded by the
Heritage Council. Recording was carried out over the past four years by the
Transition Year (TY) students of St Cuan’s College, Castleblakeney under the
guidance of their history teacher, Michael Dillon. Recording, researching and
editing has also been carried out by members of the Grave Yard Committee and
Caltra Community Council; namely Séamus Meehan, Joe Treacy and Mary T.
McLoughlin, along with Séamus Bellew.
The on-rolling Tidy
Towns three-year project for Caltra village has provided an impetus to
completing the recent improvements in the graveyard and the recording of the
graveyard inscriptions.
It was decided
to record all the inscriptions at Caltra and every effort has been made to
ensure accurate recording. The committee’s future plans include the erection of
an updated map of the graveyard with a complete list of names. It is also
envisaged that the inscriptions will be made available online. The committee
would welcome any feedback before commencing these projects, particularly if
any inaccuracies have occurred in the recording of inscriptions for this
publication.
The committee
would especially like to acknowledge the yearly donations towards the upkeep of
the graveyard. This generosity has facilitated recent improvements to the
graveyard. These include the refurbishment of the area around the cross in the
centre of the graveyard, the re-gravelling of the paths, the installation of
new lighting and the connection of a second water-tap.
October 2013.
Acknowledgements
This publication
would not have been possible without the assistance of many individuals and
organisations.
The Heritage
Council funded the mapping of the graveyard. Glenamaddy Community Development
Company assisted with the mapping, while Galway County Council continues to
support the graveyard.
The work of the
St Cuan’s Transition Year students and their teacher Michael Dillon made a
valuable contribution. The committee looks forward to further collaboration
with St Cuan’s College.
Fr Micheál
Donnelly instigated the project and invited St Cuan’s to become involved. The
support and advice of Dr Christy Cunniffe, Fields Monuments Advisor, along with
the work of Padraig Higgins – who organised the mapping of the graveyard – kept
the project on a solid footing. Ms Marie Mannion, County Heritage Officer has
also been supportive.
The committee
thanks Fr Vincent McDevitt C.S.Sp. for his support and his contribution of the
foreword to this publication. Carrie O’Sullivan’s striking impression of the
1646 font has enhanced the booklet and we thank her for generously giving of
her time. Stone mason Sean Keane, from Lowville, provided technical knowledge
that was of great assistance. The expertise of KPW Print, Ballinasloe was
invaluable in the design of the publication.
Others who have
helped on various aspects or engaged in helpful conversation were: Sheila
Bellew, Gerry Carney, Pat Clinton (formerly of DKIT), Paddy Finnegan, Michael
Healy, Frank Higgins, Conrad Keane, Gerry Kelly, Seamus Kelly (Breda), Mattie
Kilroy, Valerie Kinsella, Canon Eugene McLoughlin, Michael Meehan, Paddy
Murray, Larry Mockler, Michael Mockler (Caltra), Michael O’Grady and Fr Kevin
Reynolds M.H.M. A professional opinion on the significance of some medieval
stones was offered by Conor Brady (DKIT), Kieran Campbell, Paul Gosling (GMIT)
and Noel Ross.
The Kelly
family’s commitment towards Caltra church and graveyard, spans four generations.
We acknowledge in particular Mrs Nell Kelly and her late husband Hubert
(Bertie). Their son Hughie continues to maintain the family tradition, Nell’s
grandchildren, Claire Hurley and Conor McGrath have participated in the
inscription recording project.
The well-kept
appearance of the graveyard is a credit to the work of the many volunteers who
work week in, week out cutting grass and tending graves. The work of Galway
Rural Development is also acknowledged. Finally, the committee thanks the
parishioners and local families who have been very supportive of this project.
Foreword by Fr Vincent McDevitt
Caltra, August
2013.
In all cultures,
one of the oldest signs of civilization are the symbols relating to death and
burial. We humans take death seriously. And so it has been in Caltra down to
this day; we notice the huge support of the community at our funerals, the care
of graves and the frequent visits by family members to their graves.
It would be
difficult to put a date on the first burials in Caltra graveyard; we know that
a monastery was established here seven hundred years ago and so there would
have been burials and graves. That monastery was on the site of the present
graveyard; perhaps it is hard to say which came first – the monastery or the
graveyard. For the greater part of human history, most people have been buried
without family or personal gravestones; but the families knew where their dead
were buried.
The first
recorded burials in Caltra graveyard date from 1707 and there are more than
thirty for the eighteenth century. There are more than five hundred marked graves
in this cemetery, holding the mortal remains of those who have gone before us;
raising families, cultivating the land, helping each other, plying their
trades, enjoying themselves and passing on the faith to the next generation.
The Caltra we now have is their gift to us. Reading through the inscriptions,
the story of the parish is narrated through the faith of those generations who
have left us a testimony of their lives and times. The recording of those
inscriptions, spanning three hundred years, brings together an historical
perspective along with that of the parishioners, whose family members are
buried here.
We wish to
remember our dead and indeed we all wish to be remembered ourselves. The way we
remember our dead and the way we treat our graves is a sign of the sacredness
of human life. So we are grateful to those who care for the graves and to the
hard working and persistent groups of people who have been researching for
several years and now present to the community this lasting record of Caltra
graves. They have helped to make real the words written on monuments “in loving memory” – now we remember
better. For this gift and on behalf of all Caltra families here and abroad,
with family buried here, we say thank you.
Fr Vincent McDevitt

Name:
Caltra – or CEALLTRACH – means the place of the cell,
– a
reference to the ‘cells’ of the monastery.
c. 1320 A
Carmelite monastery was founded in Caltra by the Bermingham family. Its
location seems to be in the old graveyard. Some cut stones with markings (part
of a church window?) found in the graveyard suggest the previous presence of a
church building there.
1589 The grant of the ‘Friary of
Kiltroghe, of Pallice’, with a church and a ruined chapel called ‘Graige’ was noted
in this year.
c. 1630 The
bishop of the diocese mentions a monastery in Caltra.
1646 The
holy water
font dated to this year was found over a hundred years ago and is now placed near
the church entrance.

In early
Christian times, Caltra with Castleblakeney were in the Parish of Killasolan.
There was a church in Killasolan since the 8th century, situated in
the present graveyard. For some time, the parish of Killasolan was under the
authority of the bishop of Clonmacnoise.
Historical Notes
The Carmelites in Caltra
In Caltra village there appears to have been a
monastery near the present church. The name Cealltrach means the place
surrounding the cell. Caltra was originally called Cealltrach na Palaise (the
Friary of the Cells). Dr Boetius Egan, Bishop of Elphin (1626 to 1650) in a
letter to Pope Urban VIII, lists the monasteries in the diocese and amongst
them he mentions Cealltrach na Palaise in Killasolan Parish, as well as Eglish
Monastery in Ahascragh Parish. Archdall in his Monasticon, refers to a Friary
dedicated to the Virgin Mary at Cealltrach na Palaise. This was for Friars of
the Order of Mount Carmel, founded by Bermingham of Athenry in the fourteenth
century.
The Carmelite presence began in East Galway in Loughrea
(c. 1300), Caltra (c. 1320), Crevaghbane (in Killererin
parish) (c. 1332) and Eglish, then
known as Slewseancough (c. 1437). Gwynn
& Hadcock, authors of the authoritative book on medieval religious houses give
a paragraph to Caltra as follows:
This friary also known as
Kaltragh-ne-Pallice, was founded by the Berminghams, barons of Athenry (ALS,
339). It was built c. 1320 (IPC f. 51a); certainly before 1336 (Connellan,
lxxiii. 15f.). The Friary of Kiltroghe, of Pallice, with a church and a ruined
chapel called Graige, was granted with Arranmore and other islands and
property, to John Rawson in 1589, rent £8 12s. 7d. (Morrin ii. 167-70). Caltra
is listed as one of the convents which had been restored c. 1737 (AOR).
James O’Fallon, Bishop of Elphin (1756-1786) granted
permission for a Carmelite novitiate at Caltra in 1774 but shortly afterwards,
the friars moved to Toghergar in the neighbouring parish of Killian (Newbridge).
The last prior, Fr Hopkins died in 1873 and he is buried within the walls of
the ruined church at Toghergar.
The Ordnance Survey letters of 1839, compiled by
O’Flanagan in 1927, states that ‘there was a nunnery ... at Caltra village ...
where the parish chapel is now. The wall of the chapel attached to which lies
the old burying ground of Caltra belonged ... originally to the nunnery, which
was called Mainisteair na Cealtraighe’.
The earliest recorded inscription in the graveyard dates
to 1707 and in the early eighteenth century, there was an ‘abbey’ at Caltra, known
as ‘Caltragh Abbey’. Various members of the Bellew family desired to be buried
there. Christopher Bellew of Mountbellew in his will, dated 7 August 1705,
desired to be buried at Caltragh. His son, Michael married Mary Kelly of Mount
Kelly. Their son, Francis who died in 1738 wished to be buried near his mother
at Caltragh Abbey.
Recent finds
in the graveyard suggest the presence of such an abbey or friary at Caltra. A stone
bearing a face and a three-petalled flower was identified. It appears to be an
ogee-shaped window head. Further examination of the stone, would be required to
ascertain whether the window of which it formed part, was a one or a two-lighted
window. Another opinion suggests the stone is the head of a mullioned window,
possibly 15th-16th century.
Another fragment,
possibly part of a traceried window has also been located. It was certainly
part of a window of two lights but could conceivably be more. It may have
formed part of a gothic church window, possibly of a similar date or even
earlier. It has been pointed out, that the groove for the glazing can be seen. A
window at Knocktopher, Co Kilkenny illustrates a possible similar situation at
Caltra for the stones marked ‘A’ and ‘B’. These finds have been reported to the
County Heritage Officer and are subject to the laws pertaining to National
Monuments. The other pointer to a medieval church at Caltra, is the font dated
1646 and it bears the initials H:T, likely those of the donor. It was found
locally over a hundred years ago and was donated to the parish. It was
re-erected by Caltra Macra na Feirme in 1994. There are several other unmarked
stones in the graveyard that may also provide evidence of a medieval presence
at Caltra.
Penal Times, the Mass Rock and the
Mass Path
The Cromwellian era coupled with the Penal Laws no
doubt took their toll on religious practice and freedom in Caltra. Fr James
Finnerty of Chapelfinnerty was the principal Administrator in the area around
the 1650s. He was born near Tuam c.
1614 and became well-known as a healing priest. He was appointed Vicar General
of Elphin in 1666-7. He died in 1683 and is buried in Chapelfinnerty. Fr
McKeigue was listed as Parish Priest of Killasolan in 1668. Burials took place
at Caltra throughout the eighteenth century and as we have seen, Caltra was
listed as one of the convents restored c. 1737. The 1731 ‘Report on the State
of Popery’ in the diocese of Elphin records that Killasolan had a Mass House
and the priest was named as Fr Edward Flynn. Fenning notes that Daniel O’Kelly
was Parish Priest of ‘Killosolan’ in 1748. This is an interesting reference because
Fr Daniel Kelly ‘Parish Priest of Caltra’ is buried in Caltra. The date of 1708
on the gravestone (124a) begs the question whether there were two priests
bearing the name of Fr Daniel Kelly. He also notes that Hugh Morgan, whose
abode was in ‘Clonshee’, was Canon in Ahascragh in 1749.
During Penal
Times the Mass Rock was used as a place of worship in all weathers and all
seasons. The recorded hachured ‘dolmen’ in Greenville is traditionally known as
a Mass Rock. It was described by de Valera and O’Nualláin in 1972 (p. 28) as
‘three large blocks ... and three smaller stones ... on top of a small grassy
mound’. The Carmelites like other mendicants lived close to their old ruins –
offering Mass on the Mass Rocks and bringing the sacraments to the people. The
hide-away at Greenville was at the rear of the once Mannion residence. There
the practising priest of the time and the worshippers, were to hide at the
sight of any advancing persecuting forces as the celebration of Mass was
forbidden by law. There is also local knowledge of the presence of a Mass Rock
in the townland of Tycooley that was known as ‘Clois an Aifrinn’.
There is still evidence of the use of a Mass Path
at Caltra. The stile in the wall near the end of the old cemetery marks the
culmination of the path. Local tradition holds that the path came through the
back of what is now the garden of the Keane family. This is corroborated from
an early twentienth century O.S. map where a foot path (F.P.) is indicated in
this position. Mass Paths typically included stretches crossing fields of
neighbouring farms.
Catholic Emancipation
By the 1820s
there was a chapel in Caltra when Patrick Kelly left the generous sum of £100
to build ‘a ornament to the alter (sic.) of this chapel’ (see gravestone 58).
On Sunday 4 January 1829, Fr Morris P.P. chaired a meeting held in Caltra
church and resolutions pertaining to ‘Catholic Emancipation’ were adopted. The
passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act later that year ushered in an era of
church building. A church was built in Ahascragh c. 1835 and the church in Caltra was built by 1845. The parishes of
Ahascragh and Killasolan were united in 1847 and the first P.P. of the united
parishes was Fr Richard McLoughlin whose monument is in Ahascragh. Fr Pat
Magauran (also known as McGauran or McGovern) succeeded as P.P. in 1849 and he
in turn, was succeeded by Fr Patrick Healy in 1865.
The ‘new’ Church
In 1837
Michael Dillon Bellew granted a site for the national school in Caltra and £20
towards its erection. He also gave a donation of £100 towards the building of a
Catholic Church and a perpetual glebe for the ‘Rector’ (Tuam Herald 9/12/1837).
On 25 July 1843 Christopher Dillon Bellew laid the foundation stone of the new
and ‘commodious chapel’ at Caltra. The work was carried out under the direction
of a committee consisting of Michael Dillon Bellew, Thomas Ffrench, Cornelius
Kelly, John J. Browne, James Joyce, Willian Cruice and John Carr. The parish
was at that stage without a house ‘to shelter them on the Sabbath or festival
days at their religious devotions’. The plan was drawn up by Marcus Murray who
designed the Cathedral in Tuam. (Tuam Herald 19/8/1843). Caltra was also
notably identified with the Repeal Movement and a ‘monster meeting’ was held
there on 21 May 1843, attended by an estimated 30,000 people. A further repeal
meeting was held at Caltra in January 1845 in the new chapel, ‘a neat and
spacious building’ which had been nearly brought to completion by Fr Magauran’.
The Presbytery was not built until 1896. MacLochlainn (page 14) notes that the
church was thatched and was accidentally burnt c. 1870. The Church & General Insurance Company was established
in 1902 to insure Irish Catholic churches. The first claim made was in respect
of a fire at Caltra Church and was for 15 shillings. The church was known as St
Solan’s Church.
Our Lady of Lourdes Church
The Church at
Caltra, substantially altered and enlarged, was solemnly dedicated on Sunday 25
June 1939. It was completed at a cost of £6,000 and is an example of Gothic
architecture. Bishop Doorly paid tribute to Fr Malachy Brennan who was instrumental
in the building of two churches as well as schools and halls. The sermon was
preached by the Professor of Moral Theology at Maynooth, Dr John McCarthy who was
born in Irvilla House, Ahascragh in 1909. His parents were Michael McCarthy and
Mary Murray, sister of Fr P.J. Murray (C.C in Caltra in 1921-7). At the
dedication of the church, Dr McCarthy said the
history of the Diocese of Elphin dated back to the dawn of Christianity in
Ireland and that the first Bishop of the Diocese (St Assicus), was a
contemporary and a disciple of St Patrick. Buildings such as that of the new
church were symbols of the strength of the Faith in Ireland. The Church was
named Our Lady of Lourdes.
The plaque at
the back of the church lists the donors and those involved in the construction

This translates as: This marble and the high altar
of this church which he founded commemorates the Administrator and Doctor of
Theology, Patrick Magauran, Parish Priest of Killasolan and Ahascragh and Canon
of the diocese of Elphin. They were put in place by the flock, which he led as
a pious, learned and faithful pastor for 29 years, and by his sorrowing
friends. A most tender father to the poor and the sick, who were ravaged by
hunger and famine, but he was not once gripped by disease. This founder of Catholic
schools died a holy death, full of good works if not of days on October 14th,
1865, aged 60 years, 33 in priesthood. He lies buried outside the chancel.
The twelve stained-glass windows were donated in
memory of deceased relatives by Mrs Maria Carr, Polineask; Mrs John Crosby,
Rabane; Mrs Dalton, Caltra; Thomas Hogan, Kinclare; Patrick Kelly, Breda; Peter
Kilgannon, Greenville; James Leonard (Pat), Killasolan; Thomas Mannion, Rabane;
Rev. Eugene McLoughlin, Brooklyn; Michael Meehan, Tycooly; Martin and Ellen
Noone, Greenville and May Ward, Ahascragh. St Anthony’s statue was donated in
memory of Redita Joyce; St Patrick’s statue was donated in memory of Luke
Connelly who died on 29 April 1948 by his friends. St Brigid’s statue was
donated by Brigid Nee Loughnane in memory of her deceased relatives (see
gravestone 281). The high altar and the two side altars were made and erected
by Joseph Rock & Sons, Mountjoy Street, Dublin.
The Baptismal font was donated in memory of Fr Donagher
and the inscription reads ‘Pray for the repose of the Soul of Patrick Donogher
(sic.) P.P. Caltra and Ahascragh died 18th Dec. 1903 in memory of
whom this font is erected by his executors Right Rev. Dean Kelly P.P., V.G. and
Rev. P.J. Shanagher P.P. December 1906’. In more recent times the lectern
containing a statue of Our Lady was donated to Our Lady of Lourdes Church by
the Nolan Family in fond memory of Proinsias.
A final item of interest at the back of the church,
is a brass that was a ‘Souvenir of the Irish National Novena, in honour of Our
Lady of Lourdes, for general and domestic peace 3rd to 12th May 1918’. It was
found in the ‘Coach House’ that is to the rear of McLoughlins, Caltra.
The Stained-Glass Window
The stained-glass window
at Caltra always attracts the visitor’s eye on first arriving at the church. It
depicts the scene where Jesus appeared to a young nun, named Margaret Mary
Alacoque in the Convent of the Visitation Nuns at Paray-le-Monial in France.
She received several private revelations of the Sacred Heart, the first on 27
December 1673 and the final one eighteen months later. The visions revealed to
her the form of the devotion, the chief features being reception of Holy
Communion on the first Friday of each month, Eucharistic adoration during a
‘Holy Hour’ on Thursdays and the celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart,
which is now celebrated on the Friday, nineteen days after Pentecost. On 27 December
1673, the feast of St. John, Margaret Mary reported that Jesus permitted her, to
rest her head upon his heart and then disclosed to her the wonders of his love.
He told her that he desired to make these wonders known to all mankind and to
diffuse the treasures of his goodness. He had chosen her for this work. The window
at Caltra carries the inscription ‘Most Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us.
Erected in fond memory of Rev Patrick Heally P.P. Ahascragh and
Caltra by his devoted sister Julia Heally. R.I.P.’.
The late Mrs Mary McLoughlin embroidered a beautiful depiction of
the Sacred Heart for the Eucharistic Congress in 1932. She was then Mary Kelly
who emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1926 and returned on a visit in 1932 when she
attended the Congress. The Sacred Heart is often depicted as a flaming heart
shining with divine light, pierced by the lance-wound, encircled by the crown of thorns as
embroidered by Mrs McLoughlin. She lived to see the Eucharistic Congress return
to Dublin last year (2012), some weeks before she died on 31 July in her 107th
year. She was born on 31 March 1906 in Culleen and she was christianed Margaret
Mary. Also included on the embroidery are ears of wheat and bunches of grapes
in keeping with the Eucharistic theme where the bread and wine become the Body
and Blood of Christ. The IHS monogram is derived from the Greek word ‘Ihsoῦς’ for
Jesus, where the first three letters are iota, eta and sigma. Capitalised these
three letters are IHS in Greek and they became IHS in Latin,
as Latin does not have a character equivalent to S. The monogram was first popularised by St Bernardine of Siena and
later, with the addition of a cross over the central letter, by the Society of Jesus
(Jesuits).
Neighbouring Parishes and Townlands
The parish of
Caltra (1), is situated in the diocese of Elphin and is bordered by eight
parishes as shown on the map of neighbouring parishes namely, Ahascragh (2),
Fohenagh (3), Ballymacward (4), Menlough (Killascobe) (5), Moylough (6),
Mountbellew (Ballynakill) (7), Newbridge (Killian) (8) and Ballygar
(Killeroran) (9). Families from these neighbouring parishes are buried in
Caltra.

List of Townlands in Caltra Parish
Map of the townlands of Caltra parish.
It is interesting to note that parishes of Caltra,
Ballymacward and Menlough and therefore the dioceses of Elphin and Clonfert and
the archdiocese of Tuam meet at the point of confluence of the river Shiven and
a smaller drain where the townlands of Lehenagh, Banouges and Raheens meet. The
division of the county into baronies goes back to Norman times and some of the
townlands of Caltra (Killasolan Parish) belong to the barony of Tiaquin, while
the rest belong to barony of Kilconnell as illustatrated in the townlands map.
Cloonfarries, Culleen, Newtown, Polinaske (Polineask) are also placenames in
the parish but they do not feature on the current townland maps available from
the County Council website. Part of the townland of Lattoon is in Caltra parish
and part is in Ahascragh. Those in Caltra parish sometimes use Latoon as the
spelling and their postal address is Caltra, Ballinasloe while those in the
parish of Ahascragh have Ballinamore Bridge, Ballinasloe as their postal
address. This means that Lattoon has two different postmen!
